Not Gunna Be Enough Lithium5 May 2018 05:26
The German automaker didnt disclose any specific battery manufacturers for its contracts, but the usual suspects would be LG Chem, Samsung SDI, Panasonic, CATL, etc.
Mmmm :
LG Chem in Poland
Samsung SDI in Austria and Hungry
CATL to build in Europe
Panasonic/Tesla to build in Europe
Where in the hell are they going to get enough Lithium to build their batteries in Europe ?
Keliber Lithium in Finland is Spodumene .
Savanah Lithium in Portugal is Spodumene
Plymouth Lithium in Spain is also currently Spodumene
Wolfsberg Lithium in Austria is Spodumene .
There is no current facility at all in Europe to convert Spodumene into Lithium and too expensive for the the above to make their mines economical , so when they ship to China it will be stay in China and be consumed in China .
So we only have the other three mines that will vie for the supply of Lithium for European consumption .
Leaves EMH , Bacanora and Rio Tinto to supply the battery factories in Europe .
On good authority Telsla's gigafactory will consume aprox 35,000 tonnes .
Northvolt 35,000 tonnes per annum
Daimler 2,000 tonnes per annum
Tesla 35,000 tonnes per annum
Johnson Matthey ?
LG 3,000 tonnes per annum
Samsung 1 3,000 tonnes per annum
Samsung 2 3,000 tonnes per annum
Terra E / BMZ 35,000 tonnes per annum
Saft / Total ?
GSR Capital 3,000 tonnes per annum
JLR/Ford JV ?
A123 ?
Kreisal Electric ?
Accupower ?
Bosch ?
HD3A ?
Lets assume 3,000 tonnes for all question marks , so we have a total of 143,000 tonnes of Lithium requirement at current moment forcast time . Now the three mines left will need to supply the above Rio is capable of at least 50,000 tonnes EMH will certainly double PFS to 40,000 tonnes and Bacanaro will have to pick up the slack 53,000 tonnes , but no chance . There just aint gonna be enough Lithium to go around in Europe .
Who of the above will want to guarantee supply . Who are they going to call ?
