Technology Shift: SK ecoplant is shifting its focus from previous partner Bloom Energy to the Ceres/Doosan partnership to utilize the advanced SOFC technology. Ceres' technology is known for its high efficiency and fuel flexibility (using natural gas or hydrogen), which is well-suited for the energy requirements of modern data centers.

I think this is probably enormous for Ceres. SK are a huge Korean engineering company with a 44% share in the global SOFC market (all Bloom of course). They are pobably telling Doosan right now to build more Ceres tech factories as there is a guaranteed market!

Let hope this gov commitment to LDES also includes a commitment to support UK industry, not just "the interests of the energy consumer" which could mean the cheapest possible solutions without regard to their origin. My concern is that Chinese Li-ion and Na-ion is becoming so cheap that it could move into the LDES market.

I like the sounds of the Energypathways concept - LDES is essential on a renewables heavy grid - but the stumbling block for me to invest is; this is going to take a HUGE amount of money to bring to fruition. The company doesn't appear to have any significant cash. Share dilution after share dilution and eventual collapse? Hopefully not, but this reminds me of British Volt with their battery giga factory. I'd like to think otherwise...... I'm heavily invested in Hazer Group and they seem to have confidence that EPP is going somewhere but then they are getting paid for an Engineering Study so it business for them.

I have shares in Cornish Metals on the Barclays share investment platform. My holding is still listed under the CUSN ticker with the old share price but I can't trade it. When I search investments on the platform CM comes up under the TIN ticker but shows I have no shares. Do I need to do something or should I continue to wait. Thanks.

The article basically says that new data centers are looking at going off grid because of connection delays. That means natural gas powered fuel cells (that means Ceres), amongst other things. And a bit off topic; when are the big news outlets going to realize that in these days of the internet many people (me) want to look at news stories from many different sources. I just took out the £1 sub offer to the FT so I can read it over Xmas. After that they want £60/month! If I subscribed to 20 different outlets then that's.... far too much. I'll only read about 10 articles per month.

Re £28B for grid upgrade verses £28B for H2 electrolysis: Problem is that there is a major lack of transmission capacity from where power more and more being generated and where it's mostly used. It would help with the curtailment problem if large scale storage was sited where power from wind farms comes ashore as it could help to ensure better utilization of the current grid capacity, as well as even out the intermittency of renewables, but that can only go so far. Major grid upgrades are urgently needed.

What about methane pyrolysis, producing so called turquoise hydrogen. Looks like an alternative pathway to low carbon hydrogen plus a valuable solid carbon co-product that has many industrial uses, including possibly anodes for lithium ion batteries. No need to capture and store CO2 - which is expensive to do - yet still able to use natural gas. 🤔 Definitely a better approach than H2 with CCS. Not much good for mopping up excess power from wind farms though. BTW I'm not suggesting that MP will replace green hydrogen but could definitely be supplementary to it.

You need both else along what are you going to dispatch your "dispatch-able" power And what about producing H2 at point of use. Wires are needed for that to.

Apart from this has little to do with ITM there is no way you can describe H2 from waste as "super green". The waste in question is probably mostly plastic waste made from OIL. This is hydrogen with a large carbon footprint. Better to incinerate it and get max energy recovery and push strongly for reduced plastic use and proper recycling.

Is Doosan going to cover all regions? We need something in the UK or Europe. Yes, like Bosch. That was so unfortunate.

What worries me is that it takes a long time to negotiate a license agreement and then to build a factory and get the product to market. All the while Bloom is piling in with their own production. Could Ceres start making their own SOFCs! Perhaps they could pay a company that has a track record of large scale efficient manufacturing of engineering equipment to setup the factory.

The reason why new overhead wires will be proven to be a waste of money is because trains could now be fitted with batteries. Fast charging at stations with regenerative breaking. According to the BBC article, in the US they have some electrified freight carriages with 800Km range. That's good enough! I think if hydrogen is used it will be in a hybrid arrangement with batteries. BTW there is no suggestion of having "solar panels on trains", just arrays near electrified track for direct use by trains. The only "sad" thing is that the UK hasn't done much work on alternatives to conventional electrification. Perhaps they are waiting to see what other countries find that works.

A key feature of Ceres fuel cells, and of SOFCs in general, is that they can burn hydrocarbon based fuels, such as natural gas, as well as pure H2. This is key to the current intense interest in their possible application to powering data centers. Data centers need vast amounts of power and electricity grids are struggling with meeting this demand, leading to long connection times etc. A solution is to connect direct to a gas grid, which generally have surplus capacity and are highly reliable. In addition the ability to run on gas, a blend of gas and H2 and even pure hydrogen makes them ideal for transitioning to net zero which may required in future. In addition they are highly efficient and the waste heat can be used for cooling! This is massive for Ceres with their best in class tec!

Interesting that this new NEXO has an 80kwhr battery. That means that the usable energy stored in the battery is about 40% of the total energy stored on the vehicle, given say a fuel cell with 50% efficiency. So about 280km of its 720km range is the battery power. So it's a dual fuel vehicle or a BEV hydrogen hybrid 🤔

Yes its true that the Airbus delay is partially/largely or entirely? Due to the lack of the necessary hydrogen eco-system but that’s a large part of my point. Its going to take decades and vast amounts of money to put in the hydrogen infrastructure. Just make SAF in the Australian Outback with dirt cheap solar power and plug it in to the current fossil fuel infrastructure.

Anyway as I keep pointing out, the world going to need a lot of green hydrogen, though I believe much of it will be used in the form of derivatives like SAF, e-fuels, ammonia and methanol.

As for use of hydrogen by industry: Just transmit the energy as electricity and make hydrogen by electrolysis at the point of use with temporary on-site storage which can be filled at off peak times. This gets around the problems of transporting physical hydrogen with its low volumetric energy density.

Bearing in mind my last post, it looks like you better write to Airbus and tell them they are making a big mistake. As for “strapping tanks to the outside of a 1980’s airframe with duck tape. I expect they would at least use good quality rope.
