In cancer, PD-L1 is a protein that acts as an "invisibility cloak" for tumors. It helps cancer cells hide from the body's immune system, allowing the tumor to survive and grow undetected. A PD-L1 test tells doctors if the cancer cells are producing high or low amounts of this protein. This provides key insights into how the tumor might behave and how it should be treated:Predicts Immunotherapy Success: If a tumor has high levels of PD-L1, it is more likely to respond to "immune checkpoint inhibitors" (a type of immunotherapy). These drugs block the PD-L1 protein, stripping away the tumor's "cloak" and allowing the immune system to recognize and destroy the cancer cells.Determines Treatment Options: The PD-L1 score (often called the Tumor Proportion Score, or TPS) helps oncologists decide which specific medications to use.
