Moved to London 1971 , was told there was loads of work, went to the local pub with a brother first weekend, full of have drunk lads seemingly having a great time, not really how it was ,most of the lads lived above the pub, the pub was owned by a builder , subcontractor who in turn employed lots of the lads , paid them daily in his pub after work where most stayed and spent there days money, win win situation for the landlord, but a lot of the lads caught in a no progress situation, many of them never got any further , this went on a lot in many areas , At least I had the cop on to move on as soon as I could , got a flat etc , met a lovely Irish girl had our family and returned to Ireland 20 years ago to settle happily , A happy story ,but many unhappy stories from people I got to know while I was there ,I also danced at all those well known irish dance halls , those were the days, sadly our children will never experience the times we had , like you say the world has moved on and it all very different, but at least our children wont fall on the hard times like we did ,History does repeat itself, Our daughter has moved to London with her job , currently renting a Flat a stones throw from the Pub where I met the wife in South London , The Swan Stockwell , back in the day the best venue to pick up a colleen, had a walk down Clapham High Street last month, could not believe how it had changed , Bars Restaurants , place was jumping,
