Gas was first discovered in 1965, with production starting the following year.b However, it was not until 1970 that commercial oil was first found and not until 1975 that production began. Since 1975, there have been several dramatic swings in receipts from oil and gas (Chart C):
Between 1975-76 and 1984-85, receipts increased rapidly reaching a then record high of £12.0 billion (3.1 per cent of GDP). This reflected growth in production, high oil prices, and the introduction, then raising of the rate, of petroleum revenue tax (PRT).
Morocco Overview ;
Morocco has had several gas discoveries over the years, including:
2016: British Sound Energy announced a significant gas discovery in the Tendrara permit area in northeast Morocco. The permit area connects Morocco and Algeria to the gas grids of Portugal and Spain.
2022: Morocco made natural gas discoveries in early 2022.
2024: SDX Energy announced the discovery of a gas field with the potential for around 47 billion cubic feet.
Morocco is the 39th-largest producer of natural gas in the world, but it accounts for 0% of global production. The country imports petroleum gas from the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and Estonia.
Morocco is also developing a Sustainable Gas Infrastructure Development Program, which includes plans to build a terminal at Nador West Med and a new pipeline for LNG
