YLB PARTICIPATES IN INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE THAT VALIDATES THE QUALITY OF BOLIVIAN LITHIUM FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE BATTERIES

Bolivian Lithium Deposits - YLB consolidates its leadership in applied research by co-authoring an international scientific article that experimentally validates the quality of lithium carbonate produced in Bolivia for use in lithium-ion batteries. The publication, the result of collaboration with the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, represents a milestone in the national strategy for value-added industrialization.

The study, published in the scientific journal Energy & Environmental Materials, is titled: "From Salar to Cells: Validating Brine-Sourced Li₂CO₃ from Salar de Uyuni for Lithium-Ion Battery Cell Manufacture" and shows that the lithium carbonate extracted from the Salar de Uyuni by YLB reaches a purity of 99.59%, classified as "battery grade". Most importantly, the material underwent real pouch cell manufacturing tests and showed outstanding electrochemical behavior, comparable or even superior to imported commercial materials.

"This is the first time that a lithium carbonate produced in Bolivia is used directly in the manufacture of cells with international standards, which validates its technical suitability for the global battery industry," explained Edgar Bautista, Head of the Cathode and Battery Department at YLB and author of the article.

Unlike previous studies, this research went beyond purity analysis, integrating Bolivian lithium into the synthesis of cathode compounds such as NMC111, widely used in electric vehicles. The manufactured cells retained significantly of their capacity after 100 charge and discharge cycles, and did not present relevant structural damage in the post-mortem analyses of the electrodes.

YLB's participation in this research positions Bolivia as an actor with the scientific and technical capacity to actively participate in the energy transition. It also shows the commitment of the state-owned company to the generation of knowledge and to international articulation in science and technology.

This achievement was made possible by the cooperation agreement between YLB and the WMG centre at the University of Warwick, with the support of the British Embassy in La Paz and the UK's FCDO programme. In addition, it opens new lines of research: it is expected to validate Bolivian lithium in other cathode materials and under more demanding conditions, such as high voltages and extended cycles.

YLB PRESENTS ADVANCES IN LITHIUM INDUSTRIALIZATION DURING SEMINAR AT UPEA

Within the framework of the Week of Technical Seminars for the XIV Anniversary of the Electrical Engineering career of the Public University of El Alto (UPEA), Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB) actively participated by sharing knowledge and advances around the lithium industry, electromobility and technological sovereignty.

The academic event was attended by leading professionals from the sector. The MSc. Eng. Rodolfo Álvarez Velasco spoke on the "Lithium Industry in Bolivia: Current situation, perspectives and challenges, an approach from electromobility", providing a comprehensive overview of the work carried out by YLB in the lithium value chain and its projection towards the development of electric vehicles in the country.

For his part, Dr. Ing. Edgar Bautista Quisbert addressed the "Advances and results in the development of the lithium value chain in Bolivia", highlighting the achievements obtained in terms of industrialization, applied research and national technological strengthening.

Finally, Eng. Rodrigo Apaza Choquehuanca, through a virtual intervention, presented the advances in "Prototyping of lithium-ion batteries for applications in electromobility and stationary storage systems", demonstrating the potential of Bolivian research in this strategic area.

During the day, students, teachers and university authorities actively participated in the presentations, generating a space for technical-academic exchange aimed at strengthening the professional capacities of the new generations of electrical engineers.

YLB reaffirms its commitment to continue accompanying these training spaces, promoting the articulation between scientific development, technological innovation and the sovereign use of the country's strategic resources.

ISSUES OF ROYALTIES, ENVIRONMENT AND WATER USE ADDRESSED IN TECHNICAL INFORMATION TABLE ON LITHIUM CONTRACTS

The first technical information table on lithium contracts installed by Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB), in coordination with the Potosinista Civic Committee (Comcipo), this Friday, in the city of Potosí, focused the dialogue around departmental royalties, the environment and the use of water, reported the legal manager of the state-owned company, Pablo Nina.

"There were strong issues of greater interest, such as water, royalties and we have clarified aspects about the processes of construction of the plants, technology, the transfer of know-how (Knowledge), those were the main points that have been touched on during the course of the day," he said.

The authority explained that lithium contracts do not specify the royalty percentage, but rather they are in accordance with the provisions of current regulations and if there is a new rule that changes that percentage, these will be adequate.

Likewise, the state-owned company reported on the activities contained in the contracts for the control of environmental impact, which are in line with the Environmental Law, and that during the useful life of the projects less than 2% of the lithium resources of the Salar de Uyuni will be used.

He also emphasized that the Direct Lithium Extraction (EDL) technology, which will be applied to future industrial lithium carbonate plants, optimizes the use of water, since it uses a recycle process.

The first technical information table was attended by professionals from the mining area of the Government of Potosí, the Tomás Frías Autonomous University and the Society of Engineers of Bolivia (SIB), among others, as well as personnel from the legal, environmental, geology and research areas of YLB.

"It was very interesting to exchange criteria with YLB to learn about the contracts, to clarify some doubts. The main issue was water management, we have seen that it will not be neglected during the process of operation of the projects," said Jaime Claros, a consultant in the lithium area.

Among the conclusions, it was agreed to install other technical tables, on the socioeconomic aspects of the contracts and on geology, where YLB will present on the hydrogeological studies carried out in the basins of the area of influence of the projects.

"We believe that we have to break the mythical barrier, because we have begun to talk about mixing technical issues with the political and the only thing we achieve is to keep people in convenient ignorance, but it is time to work in a single position, depoliticize the industrial issue and elucidate the doubts and queries we have about these contracts," said the president of Comcipo, Edgar Borth.
