Orbital Data Centres - longer term demand for SSPAs5 May 2026 20:30
SpaceX aims to deploy orbital data centers by 2028–2029, with Elon Musk predicting space-based AI compute will be cost-efficient within 30 to 36 months of early 2026. The project involves launching up to 1 million specialized Starlink version 3 satellites at altitudes of 500–2,000 km, aimed at leveraging unlimited solar energy for computing.
Orbital Data Centres, especially at the megawatt or gigawatt scale envisioned for AI training, would require Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs) on a large scale for high-speed, long-distance communication, driven by the need for high-throughput, reliable communication links.
