Pfizer vaccine gives strong protection for at least six months after second dose

A study of 44,000 people given the Pfizer jab suggests the vaccine's effectiveness wanes slightly over time but still has strong levels of protection for six months.

Protection against severe COVID-19 remains at nearly 97%, while protection against symptomatic infection is at 91% over the six-month period.

The effectiveness against severe infection drops gradually every two months, from a peak of 96% two months after the second dose to 84% by six months in.

The study, conducted by Pfizer, has not yet undergone full scientific review and it does not single out how effective it is against the Delta variant.
