Dublin-listed pharma services company Open Orphan has begun testing an anti-viral treatment for Covid-19 through its London-based subsidiary Hvivo.
The testing is being carried out on behalf of Nearmedic International, a specialist pharmaceutical, biotechnological and medical company headquartered in Moscow.
The drug being tested is potentially anti-viral and anti-inflammatory, and could reduce both virus infectivity and disease severity. It will be tested against a panel of viruses including the influenza virus, circulating betacoronavirus and Covid-19.
“Hvivo is a world leading provider of services to global vaccine and antiviral development companiesand our scientists have considerable knowledge from previous anti-viral trials which gives us confidence in our testing,” said Cathal Friel, executive chairman of Open Orphan.
Open Orphan agreed to merge with UK-based Hvivo last year in a £30 million tie-up that classified as a reverse takeover. Hvivo is a clinical trial business that can accelerate drug and vaccine development.
The company previously said it would restart a project whereby humans will be deliberately infected with a coronavirus as part of efforts to develop a vaccine to Covid-19.The project was originally suspended by Hvivo after concerns there was insufficient market demand for the product.

During the week commencing 27 April 2020, Animal Free Research UK will launch a call for proposals from UK universities centred around the use of the QuasiVivo technology for research relating to COVID-19. To support this programme, Kirkstall will provide QuasiVivo cell test chambers without charge to research teams selected by Animal Free Research UK, together with technical support to those teams from Kirkstall's founder Dr Malcolm Wilkinson. Dr Williamson has accepted an invitation to sit on the assessment panel to decide which project proposals have most merit.

Carla Owen, CEO of both Animal Free Research UK and its Scientific Advisory Panel, will consider research proposals including diagnostic tests, lung disease and associated drug testing, related to COVID-19, from UK universities centred around the use of the QuasiVivo technology. This collaboration will enable research teams to respond quickly and use their skills to help understand how to treat this virus and the QuasiVivo system helps to minimise the need for animal trials.

Barcelona, Spain April 20th, 2020. SOM Biotech, a clinical-stage drug discovery and development company, announces the in vitrovalidation of three drug candidates as new therapies for the treatment of COVID-19. The three candidates inhibit the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 and therefore the replication of the virus. Clinical studies with the three candidates can be initiated immediately.

SOM Biotech has applied its artificial intelligence based screening technology (SOMAIPRO) to identify inhibitors of the 3CL proteases of SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV viruses as potential candidates to treat COVID-19.

The discoveries came as a result of the research conducted jointly by SOM Biotech and the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences led by Professor Dong-Hae Shin from Ewha Womans University in South Korea.

Within the three identified and validated drug candidates, one - Eravacycline - is an already approved drug. The second compound - Prexasertib - is in clinical development and the third one – Cynarine - is a natural compound used as a dietary supplement. All three drugs can be repurposed to treat COVID-19 and the company is working on the fastest way to prove them in patients.
