Essentially if we had done things properly we should have had antigen/PCR testing early on to find the carriers of the SARS-Cov-2 virus - they go into isolation whilst the Covid-19 disease kicks in. Then perform seralogical antibody test and if recovered - they are back out. Rinse and repeat.

This of course does not stop anyone (carrier or immune) passing on the Sars-Cov-2 virus by transference such as handling money or touching surfaces etc. Both tests are required in huge numbers its not one or the other ... not easily understood by many it seems ...

What is the coronavirus home test?
It is a finger-prick antibody test that will tell you whether you have been infected with the Sars-CoV2 virus which causes Covid-19. It detects the presence of antibodies in your blood that show your immune system has responded to the coronavirus. It cannot tell you if you currently have the virus; it is for people who have had symptoms and recovered, so that they will know they are no longer infectious and can return to work. People are usually immune to the virus once they have had it. There are case reports of some reinfections, but they are rare.

Is this the test in use at the moment?
No. That’s the standard PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test which is being used in hospitals to find out whether patients who are severely ill have Covid-19, so they can be treated appropriately. It tests for current infection and cannot tell you if you have had Covid-19 in the past. The government has said it wants to increase the numbers tested to 25,000 a day, but the last daily figure was just under 6,500. However, the pharmaceutical giant Roche has signed a deal to help, a testing centre has been opened in Milton Keynes, and the number of tests is supposed to rise to 10,000 within days and then 25,000. These will be mostly hospital patients as now, with further upscaling to 100,000 to reach key workers with symptoms.

There is a lot of confusion here about the antibody test vs the PCR.

If you are asymptomatic I.e you show no outward signs of infection of Covid-19 then you need the PCR test to determine if you are carrying the SARS-Cov2 virus. The antibody test is useless in this case. This can be used to determine so called carriers.
Once you are showing symptoms of infection (I.e symptomatic) for Covid-19 the antibody test will confirm infection as the immune system has produced the antibody. Those antibodies will remain for certain amount of time in the body.
The PCR test can still be used to determine if you have ever had the SARS-Cov2 virus as some remnants may still exist but eventually these disappear.
You can see the two types of test are not entirely mutually exclusive.

The CDC defines recovery from COVID-19 as an absence of fever, with no use of fever-reducing medication, for three full days; improvement in other symptoms, such as coughing and shortness of breath; a period of seven full days since symptoms first appeared.

Two negative swab tests on consecutive days are considered as the all-clear – meaning self-isolation can end and a patient can theoretically begin having contact with others, including at work.
