I’ve a friend who makes huge amounts on the horses. He puts hundreds of hours of study into the large handicap races (this is the only way to beat the house - when you know more than the house). He doesn’t gamble and if his selections don’t get an advantageous draw and the going isn’t good/good to firm then he doesn’t put his money down. Only bets on the flat and then only a few months of the season. Hasn’t ‘worked’ for 30 years but travels to all the tracks just to watch certain horses without ever having a bet.
