Politics heats up over polls, policy disputes23 May 2025 15:55
The country’s political landscape has once again become charged over a range of pressing issues, including the parliamentary and local government elections, the oath-taking of Ishraque Hossain as Dhaka South mayor, humanitarian corridor plans, and the management of Chattogram port.
The BNP has issued an ultimatum to the interim government, demanding that the national election be held by this December.
In parallel, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP have expressed concern over recent developments, urging unity among all anti-fascist political forces.
On Thursday, BNP leader Ishraque Hossain announced a 48-hour suspension of protests concerning his mayoral oath and the resignation of two student advisers from the interim government.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, during an “Officers’ Address” at Senaprangon in Dhaka Cantonment, reportedly urged that the next parliamentary elections be held “as soon as possible,” indicating December as a likely timeframe.
