Dr Ijaz also said, “We should reform gas exploration policy, coal mining policy, and renewable energy policy. Illegal gas connections should be detected and stopped, and carbon-free electricity should reach 40 per cent by 2040.”

He recommended that the power sector must use more of their coal fired power plants and in the future the nuclear power plants. This will reduce demand for gas in the power sector. Domestic and Commercial sectors have a good alternative fuel in LPG.

The FICCI luncheon meeting obviously couldn’t involve all members but it’s a positive step that coal as a sustainable energy for Bangladesh was raised,our COO could have forwarded the info/points relating to coal for the senior member attendees to bring up with the energy minister or if we are very lucky we might find out Asia energy actually attended……very positive and of course we are no longer up against bungs and backhanders and the big plus is it makes absolute sense to swap imports of expensive coal with home produced…….if that’s not saving co2 then I will eat my hat

The Indians sure do know how to kick him in the knackers….but that said there are genuine concerns for his activities

Further, he is facing many problems himself. Even though internationally he is lauded for his work in finance, he is involved in over 150 legal cases back in Bangladesh, including serious corruption charges. People are accusing him of taking money from a fund meant for workers at Grameen Telecom, which creates a negative view of him. It’s strange that the man known for helping the poor is now facing accusations of doing wrong against the workers he was supposed to support.

This situation highlights a big contradiction: While Yunus was pitched as the one stop solution to all problems in Bangladesh, his ideas related to the economy have hardly helped the country. And it seems, it continues to push the country further in crisis.

The irony here is that Yunus is seen around the world as a hero for helping the poor, but at home, he is a controversial figure in an important leadership role. This creates a gap between what he stands for and how the government operates in Bangladesh.
