Bodes Well For Vast11 Jun 2025 21:21
Diamond Company (ZCDC), Zimbabwe's largest diamond producer, has shifted its diamond sales almost entirely to Dubai, according to Mining.com and IDEX Online. This move allows ZCDC to sell rough diamonds directly to cutters, polishers, and traders without intermediaries, eliminating the need for auctions in Zimbabwe. Dubai has also attracted more buyers, with three auctions there attracting an average of 150 buyers, five times the number in Zimbabwe.
Reasons for the Shift:
Eliminating Middlemen:
By selling directly to end-users in Dubai, ZCDC bypasses the traditional diamond trade chain, which includes intermediaries.
Increased Buyer Base:
Dubai auctions have attracted a significantly larger number of buyers than previous auctions in Zimbabwe.
Access to Global Market:
Dubai is a major hub for diamond trading, providing ZCDC with better access to the global market.
Better Quality Diamonds:
The shift to Dubai has also been influenced by the fact that some Zimbabwean diamonds are of higher quality.
Impact of the Shift:
Increased Revenue:
ZCDC aims to increase its annual revenue from diamond sales to $1 billion by 2030.
Direct Access to Market:
The move allows ZCDC to directly engage with cutters, polishers, and traders without intermediaries.
Potential for Higher Prices:
The direct sales channel could potentially lead to higher prices for Zimbabwean diamonds.
