Bit of bumpf here on the tech specifics for materials. Copper is better rated by some 65% but this can be compensated for by diameter cross section increases. On smaller sizes such as housing then its hardly worth the effort as a bit of copper 'goes a long way' and a more chunky aluminium cable is clearly more cumbersome. Not suggesting housing wiring will be replaced under Regs, but on larger installations aluminium is most certainly used - hence the guys up the pole using it yesterday.

After a good trawl through the NG site, it is a fact that most of their current larger ug cables have fluid cooled copper conductors (very clever sounding stuff) NG say they were made like this as they were laid in the main back in the 1970's. They also say that OH cables are aluminium.

Maybe, but if the price rises too high then alternatives will be sought and used and they already are.
Whilst we're all familiar with domestic wiring being copper, an awful lot of power networks run on aluminium conductors, not copper cores. Similarly with most (non EV) modern cars, they tend to use aluminium as well. Purely due to cost.
Walking the dog yesterday got chatting with some guys working on a power pole round the corner from home, they were replacing the copper cables running up pole with single core aluminium, shown me how a joint between the two was done.
