he boss of the UK's largest recruitment firm, Reed, has said he fears current trends suggest far more people are going to lose their jobs because of the coronavirus crisis.
James Reed predicted the unemployment rate could reach 15%, meaning five million people could be out of work.
He said recent job cuts by firms were "perhaps just the tip of the iceberg."
Reed has seen job advertisements drop by two-thirds, while applications per job are rising.
This week Bentley, Aston Martin, car dealership Lookers and engineering giant Rolls-Royce have all announced job cuts.
peaking to the BBC's Today programme, Mr Reed said more losses could be on the way since small businesses do not have to give advance notice of lay offs, as big companies do.
"My concern is that the data that we're seeing, which is that the number of jobs advertised is down two-thirds and has been consistently for two months now, suggests that there could be a lot more job losses to come," he said.
He predicts unemployment will rise sharply in the autumn, when the government's furlough scheme comes to an end.
Currently, 8.7 million UK workers are receiving payments on the Job Retention Scheme.

Rate Likely Nears 20%....

Friday’s U.S. jobs report is forecast to show that the unemployment rate surged to almost 20% last month after reaching the highest since the Great Depression era of the 1930s in April. So far during the pandemic, the losses have hit those least able to absorb the blow, with a concentration in lower-wage labor markets, such as retail and restaurants. The May report will likely extend into white-collar positions. The overall payrolls figure is expected to show a loss of 7.5 million workers, after shattering the record books with a 20.5 million wipeout in April.

UK house prices fell for the third month in a row in May as coronavirus continued to plague the property market, according to a closely watched gauge.

However, the drop slowed compared to April. Prices fell 0.2 per cent month on month in May, high-street lender Halifax’s gauge showed, compared with a 0.6 per cent drop in April.

The European Central Bank expects the euro zone to suffer a deep recession this year, with losses only partly made up in 2021 as pandemic-related restrictions weigh on output for an extended period.

In what ECB President Christine Lagarde described as a baseline scenario, the ECB sees the bloc’s economy shrinking by 8.7 percent this year after much of Europe was shut down for over two months this spring to halt the coronavirus outbreak.

It then sees the economy expanding by 5.2% in 2021 and 3.3% in 2022, although Lagarde said risks to the baseline scenario were tilted to the downside. The ECB will publish forecasts under two further scenarios later on Thursday, Lagarde said.

She said the extent of the contraction and the recovery would depend on “the duration and the effectiveness of the containment measures, the success of policies to mitigate the adverse impact on incomes and employment, and the extent to which supply capacity and domestic demand are permanently affected”.

Could Lead to Negative BOE Rates, Citigroup Says.

Negative interest rates may eventually become unavoidable in the U.K., especially if there is a no-deal Brexit at the end of the year, according to Christian Schulz, director of European research at Citigroup.

The Bank of England would likely cut rates to -0.1% in the middle of 2021 if the U.K. leaves the European Union without a new trade deal in place, he said.

i thought the post over the weekend had been of quality which i followed, Nash2020 in particular has an ability to transpose the UK problem in a simple form with class.
Trump will be forced to go for the New Green Deal this will create jobs and lots of them, plus the USA is in dire need of an infrastructure upgrade...
we truly are at the epicentre of debt, unemployment leading to untold bankruptcies, the high st is been in trouble for years, the standard of living died back in y2k and personal debt will bring the house down...

The Gov will call time on doling out monies to support businesses and concentrate on infrastructure projects, lloy will be looking for a buyer and no deal will happen....
none of these things worry me but china is a concern,,,,Taiwan next...?
