Why is there no British tech titan on the scale of Google, Apple or Amazon?

This is a question that has exercised the minds of those in and outside of government for some time. Many have concluded that more needs to do done if the UK is ever going to create a $1 trillion home grown tech company.

There is no lack of potential across the digital economy, from fintech to health, quantum computing to cyber security. But the result so far is that very few British startups have grown to become digital global leaders. And no UK business has come close to approaching the huge scale reached by the largest foreign based tech firms.
But tech titans have to start from somewhere, so we should think about helping more digital businesses onto their feet in the first place.

This would benefit all businesses, not just those in the tech sector. Because every part of the economy now relies on the digital sector for its continued success: for communicating with suppliers and customers; for banking; for getting products of all kinds to market.

If we didn’t know already that digital technology is critical national infrastructure, then our experience during the pandemic has proved it unequivocally.

People earning more than £19,500 a year would pay more under a £40bn tax hike plan to boost the public finances in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

The Resolution Foundation makes the case for a range of tax changes by the middle of the decade to avoid a return to austerity and tackle the record peacetime borrowing demanded by the government's response to coronavirus.

The latest official figures showed £208bn was borrowed by the Treasury in the first six months of the current financial year alone - £175bn up on the same period in 2019."

The final-stage trial of a Chinese frontrunner vaccine candidate has been halted in Brazil due to a serious adverse event, the first time that any of the Asian nation’s rapidly developed Covid-19 shots have met with such a setback.

Testing of Sinovac Biotech Ltd.’s vaccine, called Coronavac, has been halted in Brazil after an event that occurred on Oct. 29, said the Brazil Health Agency on Tuesday, without any further detail on the illness. The study is interrupted in accordance with regulations while the agency analyzes if the study should continue, it said.

Sao Paulo’s Instituto Butantan, which partnered with Sinovac to produce the vaccine locally, said in a statement it was surprised by the decision and is looking into details of what happened in the study. Butantan said it will hold a press conference on Tuesday morning. Sinovac’s company representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Serious adverse events that occur in drug trials include death, immediate risk of death, long term or serious incapacitation, and hospitalization.

Such pauses are not uncommon in large-scale drug trials and two western developers - AstraZeneca Plc and Johnson & Johnson -- have paused their vaccine trials in recent months due to serious adverse events, only to re-start them after investigation.
