Gemfields CEO: matching rubies priceless in hands of right jeweller Share June 09 2015, 12:02pm The chief executive of Gemfields (LON:GEM), Ian Harebottle, says the pair of matching rubies found at the firm’s Montepuez deposit in Mozambique are “potentially priceless” in the hands of the right jeweller or collector. The rubies have a combined weight of 45 carats, and they will be a highlight at Gemfields’ ruby auction next week in Singapore. "It is extremely rare to find two matching rubies of this size, colour and quality,” said the CEO. "Their discovery underscores the importance of the Montepuez deposit as a source of some of the highest quality rubies the world has seen in generations.”

Emerald and ruby miner Gemfields, which counts Hollywood actress Mila Kunis among its ambassadors, has discovered a rare pair of matching rubies from its Montepuez mine in Mozambique. The 45 carat stones will form part of Gemfields' auction in Singapore later this month. Rubies have been in demand among jewellers in recent months. Last month a 25.59 carat Burmese ruby – described as pigeon blood colour – sold at Sotheby's auction house in Geneva for a record £19million. Gemfields chief executive Ian Harebottle said: 'It is extremely rare to find two matching rubies of this size, colour and quality. 'Their discovery underscores the importance of the Montepuez deposit as a source of some of the highest quality rubies the world.' Harebottle said the two Mozambican rubies are also 'pigeon blood' colour which is usually only found in rubies from Burma. The discovery of the pair of rubies follows a 40 carat stone, dubbed the 'Rhino Ruby', that Gemfields announced last year.
