Novo Nordisk’s alcohol-related work is still early-stage and mostly indirect: semaglutide is being studied for reducing alcohol intake and for alcohol-related liver disease, but the company has not positioned it as a dedicated alcohol-use-disorder product. Solvonis’ SVNS pipeline is much more directly targeted at alcohol use disorder, with SVN-001 in Phase 3 for severe AUD and SVN-002 in Phase 2b planning for moderate-to-severe AUD.
Novo looks like a large, diversified company testing whether its existing metabolic drugs can also help with drinking-related outcomes. Solvonis is a narrower, higher-risk, higher-upside bet on alcohol addiction specifically, because its whole pipeline and value case are tied to AUD clinical success.
