Thanks James for the HSBA info - I wondered what caused the spike. I agree the market is difficult to read at the moment with both positive and negative effects coming together. Emerging markets and currencies taking a hit, China slowing down while the developed world seems to be improving. AA, I see you like your penny shares. Dow up tonight 0.7%.
Quite a bounce for the old girl - will she soon be breaking the £3 barrier? Generally some positive signs after the sharp drop. Is the drop over? Dow up 0.47% tonight - not a dramatic jump - will a change in direction be confirmed tomorrow? lego - just popped in for a cup of Horlicks before bed.
Well said James. Short term fluctuations are very difficult to predict however certain sayings are worthy of note such as, 'The trend is your friend' and in the words of Warren Buffett:- 'Look at market fluctuations as your friend rather than your enemy; profit from folly rather than participate in it.' 'We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy when others are fearful.' 'Rule No.1: Never lose money. Rule No.2: Never forget Rule No.1'
Wee, sleekit, cowran, tim'rous beastie, O, what a panic's in thy breastie! Thou need na start awa sae hasty, Wi' bickering brattle! I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee, Wi' murd'ring pattle! I'm truly sorry Man's dominion Has broken Nature's social union, An' justifies that ill opinion, Which makes thee startle, At me, thy poor, earth-born companion, An' fellow-mortal!
You're an awful man James - not taking notice of the main indices. You've had lots of experience over the years and so I guess you know the ropes. I'm still a chartist by nature - I guess we all have our different approaches. I was expecting a normal January uplift through to May especially with things improving in the developed world but a bad January doesn't bode well. A certain amount of volatility can be expected so good luck with your timing. Enjoy the game.
Greetings all. I was just wondering if you share my concern at the rate of fall in the indices over the past two days. Currency problems in emerging markets plus tapering seem to have spooked the market. Concerns about slower growth in China may have a lot to do with sell off. Wall street saw its worst week since June 2012. Supermarkets may perhaps be seen as a safe haven but I'm not sure about that - although to be fair they've certainly taken a hit over the past couple of months. Glad I pulled out of VED on Tuesday they're down around 10% since then. Good luck - take care.
