I am a lazy investor. I always do the easiest thing. I expect that will mean I switch to UK shares when the float finally happens using the promised advantageous terms. I have followed the same lazy route about five times in the past with corporate changes to Vodafone and Cable and Wireless for instance. It has always worked out well.

Hansard has risen considerably over the last week. Ex-div today and price dropped nearly 5%. Suggests some of the wealthier marketeers are using us as a short term cash cow. Ex dividend will mean further falls I expect. At least we have a good 5p per share from our own final dividends

I am wondering if it is the ex-dividend date this week. If so I would expect a similar rise at this time 2013. wwill have to see if there is a sharp fall early October.

There is an article in this week's Economist on why companies buy back their shares. One major reason I had not understood is that it can shift debt offshore which is (apparently) tax efficient.This makes a third possible reason for buying back: 1 They are using this as a way to reward shareholders (they are not promising a dividend) 2 They do not wish to be taken over by a competitor, (there are a few wolves out there) 3 They prefer to pat taxes offshore, (this has been known before especially in Finance)

And of course work is afoot to float Santander UK. Whether or not it actually floats, I don't understand why such a successful investment in the UK is so out of line, and another strong bank in the US would do no harm either if it were possible..

103,513,318 shares purchased by Svg since 2008 giving the company a very protective 49% of the total share holding (please check my Maths). I have fallen for this twice before on this site. Santander is a powerful bank with 3 million customers across 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries. Customer base growing at 20% per annum. I like the way it allows national banks considerable autonomy. The share price has historically been 100% higher. Santander suffers from an almost subconscious problem, a Spanish bank successful world wide? They have shown a magical ability to find huge sums from around the world when needed. However working on last year's profits, (I don't really know about their debts), asimple entry into a compound interest calculator will show the neccessary 16% growth should occurv within two years. So let's say April 2016. What have I said??????

I so agree ! I record all my shares on April 1st each year. by add the dividend to the price growth. According to my records Santander has beaten 15% per year since I invested April 2012 ago. This year the gain since April is 10.73% but this includes the dividends for the whole of this year to April 2015, as it is easier to work out like that.

I agree, too many cooks spoil the broth. I am trying very hard to understand how this company works. I have only just bought in after reading a few recommendations in the press, and taking on board the broker advice. I have found the website useful and at least now know where they have invested, but they are hard to understand. it was a shock to see such a major investor pull out the moment I jumped in...

I have just sold al my Verizon shares. I liked the dividends and sold at a good profit. However I decided that the Atlantic and the consequent time difference, plus a tax system I did not understand spoilt the fun for me. I still consider Verizon to be a good hold.

Seems to be reflected in a small price increase too, so the market actually thinks the results good enoug.

Hopefully bigger profits will boost growth and investment, but I take your point and the pound has strengthened.
