"...and has developed an idiomatic style of speech which sounds distinctly native. "peeps" and "chunky" don't sound very continental to me."
Jagadish, as you were wondering, please allow me to state my opinion too:
Wouldnt you agree that me, after investing in international stocks for many years (SMI, Ftse, DAX & DOW) and posting since 2014, I may have improved my business English a little bit? And picked up some of the positive british slang? This is exactly as it is.
Probably you noted another thing: The non-fluent style of my typing (college grammar), as well as the absence of senseless name calling. Being foreigners we dont grow up with any of those words (apart from what you see on internat movies). So it doesnt make sense for us to go name calling in a foreign language.
Think about it. How many times did you say shi7 last week?? And howe many times did you say "merde"? Not once? Because the second word doesnt make sense and has zero meaning for you.
Another example: Have you ever seen middle class french or german tourists visiting the UK and using extreme english swear words during their travel? No? Because these things only have a meaning for you in your native language. Amybe this explains why none of that silly name calling here has bothered me in any way. Partly I dont understand the meaning ("waffle"?), and the next day when I google the word, too much time has passed...
Another example are mixed british couples: For instance a british man living with a spanish wife. As soon as they have a fight, she will quickly switch language to her own native language. Only this allows her to express herself fully. No Sir, English is not my native language. End of.
Have a good evening everyone, and sorry for the interruption!
