CE marking face masks during COVID-19
The EU is currently facing supply bottlenecks for both respirators and surgical masks. In order to facilitate the supply of face masks, the European Commission has released temporary guidelines under which critical medical devices and PPE can be sold without CE marking (read the conditions here).

Normally, standards must be purchased and used in line with intellectual property right rules, but the European Commission has temporarily made all relevant standards freely and publicly available to ensure that all masks which are manufactured meet EU directives for health and safety. You can download the standards from the websites of CEN national members.

The European Commission has also provided additional recommendations for actors in the supply chain to facilitate the production and distribution of face masks:

All the disposable 3-ply mask that are commonly available are not readily biodegradable, we are currently testing recyclable and compostable materials for a future generation of masks.

Our biggest limitation now is trying to scale up so that everyone around the world can have access to this anti-viral technology. We deliberately targeted the disposable surgical type masks as they have a price point that is accessible by everyone, however, they are not a tight-fitting mask like the more expensive KN95 “duckbill” models.

All were made with only one layer which affected their ability to filter potentially harmful particles.

The lab tests revealed masks with multiple layers are much more effective than single layer masks at filtering particles.
At the other end of the scale were a NEQI reusable face mask (£15 for 3), and Bags of Ethics Great British Designer face coverings (£15 for 3), available at Asos and John Lewis.

Ours will be a pound. And we should be pumping out millions a month. This share is very undervalued at present. Imo.
