icaraguan mining chamber Caminic has hailed the sector’s growing economic role, amid a surge in exports and strong exploration spending.
In H1, the country’s mining exports increased 44% by volume and 58% by value, the chamber was quoted as saying by local television station Vos TV.
Over the same period, four mining companies have invested US$60mn in exploration, according to chamber president Sergio Murillo.
The companies are Hemco, Calibre Mining, Mako Mining and artisanal mining group Plantel Los Ángeles, he said.
Mining employs more than 14,500 people in Nicaragua, Murillo said, as well as playing an important role in community development.
Exports have been boosted by higher gold prices, with the yellow metal now Nicaragua’s most valuable export.
