The flare system on FPSO /Platforms is safety critical, in the event of an emergency situation developing it will require the activation the blow down to flatten all vessels containing gas. The gas will then be diverted via valves to the flare pipework and burnt off at the flare. This will all be in the safety case and the time taken will depend on the volume of gas involved . The point being the flare has to be lit at all times to achieve this.

There has been a lot of questions asked about the length of time it is taking the commissioning, most come from non-oilies, but some just make me smile. There will be electrical commissioning, instrumentation commissioning and mechanical commissioning for the general running of the plant. There will also be Safety Critical Elements which have a Cause and Effect Matrix, depending on the trip being tested the effect can be a partial shutdown or complete shutdown of the production plant, the fire pumps may start if the cause was activated through the fire and gas detection system, after the test is complete all the system which trip, have now to witnessed and reset which takes time. This is all tick in the box stuff but it all has to be witnessed.

I get the impression most on this bb think of the commissioning phase as the stage before start up, but that is only where in begins, a lot of the commissioning will be completed before start up but there will still be fine tuning/tweaking, dealing with bugs in the control systems which will happen during production phase, It is certainly not plug and play.

Can you tell this BB how it is possible to carryout a maintenance shutdown, say 14 days when the wells are shut in, process pipework is nitrogen purged without running the turbines on diesel or diesel generators.
In the event of a process trip the only gas available is in the separators, this will give you 30 minutes, so you manually change over to diesel, or automatically, if the system set this way ( low level fuel gas) pressure switch in the fuel gas pipework.
The AM will never have its diesel tanks empty, they are vital in a blackout

You are into theories, consider this, if the Safety Case states in a catastrophic event the AM has to unlatch, the insurers and the HSE would want to witness an unlatching, this may have happened the first time, but BW were unable to relatch as time ran out because of bad weather. Hurricane would be happy to carry out this way before they go into production.

I laughed at the meteorite theory, but you may have hit on something. I have been told that one of the main concerns of a proposed site, for the British Spaceport ( Melness Sutherland ) which would launch small satellites into space is rocket debris falling on oilrigs, but that would be long after FOIL. Better get a hard hat.

Twenty years ago I worked on a platform which had SAMI vsd esp's, the life expectancy of the pumps was two years before they burnt out. It required a small drill team to pull the pump/motor, which was 90ft long and about 8" in diameter, they came with cable pre-wired and only needed cable connected at joint box in the well head area. This is obviously a different beast but there are similarities.

The metering system will be on board the AM as it a fiscal requirement, there will be a metering tech on board who is employed by a third party, to maintain and calibrate the system. The oil and gas trains are metered separately which is after the separators. There will also be a prover loop on the oil system which is used to prove the meter. There may also be automatic sampler in the export pipeline which will take snatch samples of oil over a 24hr period, which deposited in a small barrel. The sampler is set to the flow rate, from memory the samples taken could have been 5 litres, but unsure about that.
So I can take it the English have chips on their shoulders.

Eyjafjallaeruption the Iceland Volcano which erupted in 2010 did effect helicopter flights to the platforms in the North Sea, the ash cloud was full of silica ( glass ). There were rig crews stuck in all the heliports in Aberdeen for days, checking in at 06:00 am until 07:00 pm, then back to the hotel. I was phoned at home and told not to bother coming up to Aberdeen because there were no accommodation and the backlog of flights would take several days to clear if the weather improved (change of wind direction)
