A group of young people from the urban commune of Kouroussa gathered this Saturday, August 26 to protest against the KGM gold company established in the area.
These young rebels criticize the managers of the said company for non-compliance with the terms of local content, particularly in the staff recruitment process.
Outraged, they barricaded all the roads giving access to the KGM company sites.
A witness contacted by Guinéenews explained: “there had already been an uprising of young people against this company. During the negotiations under the auspices of the authorities, promises were made. In particular, 4 positions of high responsibility had been promised to the population of Kouroussa including, among others, that of director of human resources and that of the director in charge of community affairs. But these agreements were not respected. This is what the demonstrators put forward as the reason.
Then he added: “These clashes, contrary to what we were used to witnessing, did not result in significant material damage or loss of human life and no serious injuries were reported. »
For his part, Colonel Idrissa Camara, prefect of Kouroussa, also contacted by telephone, told us this: “yes indeed, we are aware of this youth revolt clearly directed against the recruitment carried out by the KGM company. But we did not involve the police. We favored dialogue. We were in discussion and a mission came from Conakry. But without a memorandum of understanding and they turned around. This could have made the situation worse. However, we managed to calm things down. By sunset we will provide you with information on the agreement that will be reached.''
It should be noted that at the time of sending this dispatch, no agreement has yet been reached. The young people are calling for the departure of several company officials and demanding that they be replaced by locals.
