Mrgreenlight think the reaction is explained somewhat by the fact the Chinese Communist party is full of elderly and infirm ppl at the very top. Possibly they are just afraid and it explains their ineptitude. If you are a pleb there and you have Corona virus you aren't going to turn yourself in so the authorities can imprison you and your beloved. The only ppl showing up at hospital are probably those at death's door. I'd bet a million plus have had this in China.

My only reservation is it is clearly contagious so the number of confirmed cases can't possibly be right. There is no way on god's earth that there have been only 17000 cases in that country which is absolutely giant. That number is not credible. Deaths I don't know they may be suppressed too.

Would tend to agree anon but I suppose one could argue the over reaction to this virus, at least I think the Chinese have overreacted, could have dire global economic consequences. I mean look how many ppl the Chinese kill in labour camps all the time. Why get so get up about 170 deaths. They probably kill that many daily in their labour camps.

Agree stage but Africa is being shafted by the West on the fossil fuel investment side. World Bank won't lend them money for coal fire, so without cheap reliable energy tough for them to get growth. I suppose the Chinese are investing heavily so may be they will build the needed infrastructure.

Skier don't fan hysteria that 2% figures depends on assuming not a soul in the whole of China had the thing who wasn't diagnosed. And from these mere 7700 it's managed to spread world wide. Being slightly sensible and realising China is a poor and absolutely massive country and many can't see doctors safe to assume to the diagnosis rate might be 1 in 10. That would put mortality at 0.2%. Is that worth shutting the world over. Of course not the reaction to the virus is worse than the virus.

Skier it's not 100 times more deadly than flu it's probably about the same. It seems about as spreadable than SARS. It won't be contained and silly to pretend it can be. Silly to shut down a country over it.
