When I mentioned huge vested interests earlier I was referring to the whole supply chain, the landlords/councils too.
Put the case that the High Street is wiped out and the only sizeable buyer those suppliers have left is Amazon. Take a wild guess at what happens at a future buying discussion - Amazon own the table and the suppliers can like it or lump it - no competition and Amazon can put YOUR lights out even easier. Likewise if Ashley ends up owning the High Street.
Ditto the landlords - quite frankly, if I was a landlord/council then right now I'd be falling over myself to secure long term deals at discounts that make it worth the while of the likes of Ashley to bother pursuing business interests on their land and which help to mitigate medium-term difficulties for the likes of Debenhams. Just imagine the total square footage of tumbleweeds "prime" retail space left vacant with the likes of HoF, Debenhams and John Lewis going to the wall lol - there are only so many Poundshops you can have in one place and they're not going to be paying top dollar for your "prime" location retail space :)
In the meantime, everyone will continue to talk their own books - Ashley/landlords/stock market players et al :)
