"The electrification of car sales is a significant goal for European manufacturers, but they face major obstacles in achieving it fully by 2030. While battery technology has made progress, a new analysis by Transport and Environment (T&E) reveals that European manufacturers are struggling to secure the critical minerals needed for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. According to T&E’s analysis, less than 20% of the estimated demand for cobalt, lithium, and nickel has been secured based on publicly disclosed contracts. This represents a significant risk to the ability of car manufacturers to achieve their electrification goals. However, six manufacturers, including Volkswagen, Ford, Renault, Stellantis, BYD, and Tesla, have managed to secure long-term contracts for these critical minerals or have implemented a substitution strategy."
