The price of oil fell sharply on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump said Iran was “standing down”.

In an address to the nation, Trump said Iran was backing off after a missile attack on US bases in Iraq overnight. The President said this was a “very good thing for the world”.

Oil had been drifting lower over the day and fell further on the President’s comments. Crude (CL=F) was down 3.8% to $60.28 per barrel at 4.40pm UK time and Brent was down 3.3% to $66.00 per barrel.

Oil had rallied sharply in the preceding days amid fears about a possible conflict between the US and China that could disrupt supply.
