THE BIGGEST NEWS TO COME OUT OF MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS MAY NOT BE "MOBILE" AT ALL MICROSOFT Strangely, the biggest news to come out of Mobile World Congress may not be "mobile" at all — at least, not in the traditional, smartphone-centric sense of the word. Microsoft has chosen Barcelona as the venue to unveil its so-called "Consumer Preview" release of Windows 8, and all indications are that it'll feature some significant changes from the version showed at BUILD last year. Gone is the Start button orb — a staple of the platform for over fifteen years — and we're also expecting to see some new applications that take advantage of Windows 8's all-new Metro style interface. Of course, there may be method to Microsoft's madness. As unusual as MWC may seem to unveil an operating system targeted at desktops and notebooks, the notion of Windows on ARM looms large on the horizon — a product that Redmond hopes will push it far deeper into the consumer tablet market than it's ever been before. For attendees of this show, of course, tablets are a familiar sight; Android tablets were a major focus at last year's event, and they'll undoubtedly be again this year. Windows 8 is also rumored to foster considerably tighter integration with Windows Phone. Microsoft has "gone big" with its renaissance mobile platform in each of the last two Mobile World Congresses — in fact, Windows Phone 7 debuted there two years ago. The company has been relatively tight-lipped about what we'll see on the Windows Phone side in Barcelona this time around, but we're expecting at least two major revisions in 2012: Tango, which focuses on lower-end hardware for wider-scale internationalization, and Apollo, which is shaping up to be a more thorough revamp. At the very least, we'd expect a full unveiling of Tango, and we wouldn't be surprised to see some hints of Apollo thrown in as well. http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/22/2816623/mwc-2012-preview
The consumer version of Microsoft’s newest hero system Windows 8 will be previewed this year in Spain at Mobile World Congress 2012. We’ve been invited to the event, it taking place on the 29th of February at 3PM local time and will be bringing you all the action we can capture as it happens. This Consumer preview will likely let us know exactly what we’ll be looking at in the release for Windows 8 to the broader market early this year, hopefully inside the end of February or soon after. http://www.slashgear.com/microsoft-windows-8-consumer-preview-announced-for-mwc-2012-08212660/

February 21, 2012 3:34 PM New 28 nm chip is more than twice as powerful as anything on the market Qualcomm, Inc. (QCOM) impressed at the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show in January. At the show it talked about its transition down to the 28 nm node (via Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Comp., Ltd.'s (TPE:2330) new processes) and pushing Snapdragon 4 (S4) system-on-a-chip designs onto the market. Developers' first taste of S4 will be delivered via the MSM8960 Mobile Development Platform (MDP), which will be distributed at the 2012 Mobile World Congress, which starts Feb. 27 in Barcelona, Spain. But AnandTech scored an early unit and has been busy benchmarking it. How does the fourth generation Snapdragon fare? To quote AnandTech: The [CPU] performance advantage... is insane. The super-chip's performance comes, in part, thanks to the new Krait core, which is built on a licensed ARMv7 instruction set from ARM Holdings plc. (LON:ARM). The new core is similar, in some ways, to the ARM Cortex-A15 intellectual property core from ARM Holdings. February 21, 2012 at 1:49 pm Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) has a consensus price target of $27.90 and current price around $27.32, for a potential upside of about 2%. Intel reported stellar earnings last month and the stock posted a new 52-week last Friday of $27.50. Sales of PCs have been good, and margins have remained high. The new Ultrabooks, which the company is supporting with a very strong marketing budget, could really push the company substantially higher. As of this moment though, shares are fully valued. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) has a consensus price target of $7.00 and a current price around $7.38, leaving no upside. The company reported better-than-expected earnings for the fourth quarter and several analysts have boosted their target prices for the stock. The company’s shares have jumped 15% in the past month. ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH) has a consensus price target of $33.75 and a current price around $27.55, for a potential upside of more than 22%. ARM’s target price has jumped by nearly $7/share since the beginning of the year, but it is trading at nearly the same price as a month ago. Shares gained nearly 35% in the past year, but royalty payments are falling. One analyst firm reckons that ARM has a 10% cost advantage on its Windows-based notebooks (dubbed ‘WARM’) when compared with Wintel machines. The firm also estimates that ARM could capture 60% of the sub-$500 notebook market. http://247wallst.com/2012/02/21/upside-expected-in-top-semiconductor-stocks-intc-amd-mu-brcm-qcom-armh-sndk-altr-amat-txn/#ixzz1n4PJdYnS
February 2012 AMD Seeks Edge in Intel-ARM Clash The new management at Advanced Micro Devices has correctly recognized that 2012 is the beginning of what Intel’s Andy Grove used to call an inflection point.
Feb 21, 2012 12:50 pm The way we use computers has changed. The growing popularity of tablets shows that battery life and portability are just as important as speed and performance. This does not bode well for Intel (INTC). Recent moves at both Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT) are pointing toward Intel’s waning supremacy in the chip market. Last year, Microsoft announced that the long-awaited Windows 8 touch-enabled operating system will run on ARM (ARMH) processors as well as Intel x86/64 chips, ending decades of mutual exclusivity dubbed “Wintel." The relationship between Microsoft and ARM was initially thought to be exclusive to the Windows mobile platform. Windows on Arm (WOA) for full-blown PCs will include lightweight, low-powered versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and One Note. Last week, Microsoft CFO Peter Klein suggested that older Windows applications could be rewritten to run properly on the WOA systems. ARM, which Apple helped establish through a joint venture in the 1980s, makes chips that are tailor-made for the mobile age. The main advantage of ARM Core processors is that they are smaller and more power-efficient. Intel chips are undisputedly more powerful, but they are more expensive, larger, and more power-hungry. This is why the iPhone, iPad, and myriad Android (GOOG) devices use these chips. The lower power usage enables the new operating system to re-imagine a lot of what we take for granted in a PC, and make them more like iPads. According to Microsoft engineer, Stephen Sinofsky, WOA computers won’t even need to be turned off. In more bad news for Intel, Apple is even rumored to be looking to equip future iterations of the Macbook or the lightweight Macbook Air with ARM chips. CEO Tim Cook didn’t rule out the possibility in a recent interview for the Wall Street Journal. Not every user is going to need a high-performance chip, and this is clearly where the growth is. Tablets sales are growing fast and even cutting into PC sales. These buyers are telling the giants of tech that portability and power-saving is just as important as speed. ARM makes the chip for the devices that are selling. With this foray into desktops and laptop PCs, ARM might extend its dominance over tablets. If Intel wants to compete in the future PC market, it will have to make PC chips more like the tablet chips. http://www.minyanville.com/businessmarkets/articles/chips-Intel-windows-8-microsoft-apple/2/21/2012/id/39511#ixzz1n4IfPZZO

Tuesday, 21 February 2012 12:19 HP to offer ARM servers in second quarter Energy efficient Redstone's Maker of expensive printer ink HP will let select customers tinker with its first low-power server based on an ARM processor in the second quarter. Computer World is reporting how early access customers will be able to start testing and benchmarking the proof-of-concept server, which will be part of a family of low-power servers being developed by HP under a new platform dubbed the Redstone Server Development Platform. HP has high hopes for its Gen8 servers. They will use ARM based hardware and software which it thinks can deliver more value per watt of power. They are the result of a $300 million research programme, known as Project Voyager, which HP embarked upon to try to find new ways for data centres to cut costs and get home after being lost in the Alpha Quadrant without jettisoning Nelix into outer space. The senior VP of HP's industry standard servers and Software Group, Mark Potter, said that HP wanted to develop servers that would “take care of themselves.” We wonder if that means that they have been taking Judo lessons. Gen8 will be replacing the Proliant G7 series that was introduced in 2010. This set will be made available in March. http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/26015-hp-to-offer-arm-servers-in-second-quarter
February 20, 2012 12:37 PM PST With less than a week to go before the huge wireless trade show begins in Spain, ZTE has announced two Android 4.0 phones, the ZTE PF200 and N910. If you've been dreaming of Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones, the 2012 Mobile World Congress promises to be quite the party. Early this morning, ZTE announced that it would reveal two Android 4.0 devices at the annual wireless trade show, which begins February 27 in Barcelona. FEBRUARY 20, 2012, 7:19 A.M. ET Dow Jones Newswires LONDON (Dow Jones)-CSR PLC (CSR.LN), the maker of chips for bluetooth technology, Monday reported revenue at the top end of expectations for the fourth quarter of 2011 and increased its final dividend to 7.1 cents, from 6.5 cents the previous year, while announcing a share buyback program of up to $50 million. The company posted a pretax loss of $52.17 million for the quarter ended Dec. 30, against a $58.34 million loss for the same period the previous year, on revenue that increased to $244 million, from $184.8 million. The quarterly revenue was at the top of CSR's guidance of between $230 million and $250 million. CSR expects revenue for the first quarter of 2012 to be in the range of $205 million to $225 million. Chief executive Joep van Beurden told Dow Jones Newswires that the decrease between fourth quarter and first quarter revenue is due to seasonality, with sales expected to increase towards the third quarter of the year as customers stock up ahead of Christmas. The increase in the final dividend makes for a full year payout of 10.3 cents, up from 9.8 cents the previous year. CSR reported cash, cash equivalents and treasury deposits of $277.8 million at Dec. 30, down from $440.1 million at the same time the previous year, largely due to the merger with Zoran Corporation, a provider of imaging and digital technology for digital cameras, home entertainment and printer products which was completed August last year. Broker Peel Hunt described the cash position and the buyback program of up to GBP50 million as "positive." However, Peel Hunt notes that CSR cannot compete in the smartphone and tablet markets, is "cornered into smaller, lower growth markets" and sees CSR as the least attractive of its peer group due to the competitive position. Peel Hunt, which has a 'hold' rating on CSR, has lifted its target price on the stock to 185 pence, from 160 pence. Other large chip makers include ARM Holdings PLC (ARM.LN) and Imagination Technologies PLC (IMG.LN), both of which produce chips used in Apple iPhone and iPads. CSR's fourth quarter revenue was boosted by its merger last year with Zoran. The company said the integration of Zoran has largely been completed. Van Beurden told Dow Jones Newswires that synergies from the acquisition with Zoran are already being achieved, but it will take up to two years for these to be fully realized. -Shares at 1220 GMT, up 46 pence, or 20%, at 273.9 pence valuing the company at GBP457.13 million. http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20120220-704163.html
