I have just had one of the most disturbing discussions I can ever recall.
Assuming we were not in lock down for Christmas, I recently offered to drive (Xmas eve) to London from Exeter and return (8 hrs) same day, to collect a family member.
This person is a flight attendant on an international airline, doesn't drive, and was about to book train tickets. He would also need to use the tube that day.
I've driven this journey once before, and I was exhausted after.
I made this offer because I felt that if trains were still running, and virus contagion figures were still out of control, I ASSUMED he would not be looking forward to taking such health risks on a 3.5 hr train journey.
Assuming no lockdown for any of the family members who are presently in three locations, we are to spend a 4 day Christmas (& a birthday) in a luxury 6 berth chalet (with jacuzzi and attendant up-market facilities).
Turns out:
1 The Flight attendant is mystified why I would make such an offer to collect, as it 'isn't necessary, - I'm not fazed by regularly flying, and I use the tube a lot, ie each time I travel to/from Heathrow'.
2 Another family member felt an 8 hour round trip was too long, and the risks to the flight attendants health I was trying to avoid, weren't worth it. 'Your efforts are futile'.
3 Another family member (she still parties a lot) thinks all the government contagion figures are made up, and that there is no virus problem present or future.
4 Another family member thought I was mad.
I made the offer, thinking that all family members would be glad that the Flight Attendant had not had to make his journey via tube and train, exposing himself - and thus them - to the virus.
Other family members have made it clear that they want the Flight attendant to make his own way to Axminster, and they don't consider they will be feeling at viral risk in any way at Christmas.
'Trains and planes get regularly cleaned'.
I've told them I shan't be joining them at Christmas, I can't deal with such stupidity, never mind the health risks.
There really is no helping some people.
