Andyalan,
Ar present ~4% of DEC shares (~3M) are shorted in the UK and 2,6M shares are shorted in the US (a total of ~5,6M shares that will be bought back at some time) . The canvas deal will complete by end of month (as per recent results call) and the switch to a US listing should also complete by end of month.
These 2 events will mean that the shares in issue will increase to 80M due to the share component of the canvas takeover and a potential $160M of purchasing from tracker funds (e.g. S&P 600) will be triggered (or ~10,4M shares) if DEC market cap reaches $1,2B which at current prices it does. Finally DEC have a shareholder mandate to purchase up to ~3,8M more shares and the financial capacity to do so if management wish.
On the other side, there will also be a selling from FTSE250 trackers, however the volume of shares traded in the US market is averaging 100% more than trading in London. So the buying impetus will be greater than the selling impetus from the listing switch.
Given the above, I would expect to see net buying demand between now and year end and a number of shorters reducing/closing positions also adding to demand. In fact this has already happened with Millennium Capital (DIFC) Limited recently reducing their short position below the 0,5% reporting limit.
Just on the above I would expect further positive movement in the DEC share price. However, I am also observing a change in sentiment towards nat gas shares in the US. Given DEC looks a good value play from my perspective, maybe the negative sentiment that has held back the share price may be clearing. I suspect Citi will be wrong again and the share price exceed their targets over the coming months.
Just my thoughts. Good luck & DYOR.
