If you move to cash with a 30-40% buy back discount in mind you might be disappointed, I think 3-4% might be nearer, Russia won’t invade Ukraine, it’s just Putin posturing against US hawks. Putin wants the Russian people to stay on his side for his legacy and ego and this war would kill both stone dead

A windfall tax on Shell and BP is robbery. A government employing such ‘bandit’ style policies should be met with extreme measures by the Companies. Like BHP moved to Sydney from London. Can they move there primary listing to the US, Their dividends are dollar based?.

Also all their future CAPEX spending in the UK should stop pronto if a tax like this was imposed, particularly all their renewable investments. See how that affects the UK’s renewable transition and future new job prospects then?

A big ask perhaps but this would be a fair response to such a discriminating tax. Exon, Chevron, and Armco, etc etc won’t have ‘bandit’ taxes imposed on them. Brexit Britain is now a global operator allowing free enterprise to thrive.

BBC and Channel 4 are the worst exponents of ‘the country owes me a living’ and this ‘we expect something for nothing’ vibe society. Having to pay TV lIcence for all their socialist clap trap is the last straw.

I have a big commitment in BP and Shell and all bought before pandemic. There is a lot of forward price hopes for BP here of £6 and even £10 and I would be happy with the first and ecstatic with the second. (Both are crystal ball hopes / predictions). All I know is our UK super majors are performing badly compared to the two main US ones.

Taking end December 2019 and close of price Dow on Friday the comparisons are as follows, Shell MINUS 13.4%, BP MINUS 20% Exon PLUS 8% and Chevron PLUS 7.6%.
Oil at 90 US dollars this differential seems daft!!!!!!

With my heavy commitment and loss I have to remain loyal to BP and Shell but have I backed the wrong horses. If my portfolio commitment in O&G had been in Exon and Chevron I would be a lot happier and richer now.

With all the wisdom on this platform are there any useful comments?

Hi bald-eagle, my COP26 HYPOCRISY post was an attempt to defend BP and Shell against ESG investor negativity and climate change activists targeting. Perhaps my arguments were not clearly expressed or you are a ‘Bird watching climate change activist’ and not a Shell or BP investor, which I am.

Whatever, I am very concerned about the climate change issue but try to see all angles of the problem and the need for rational, fare
and carefully worked out remedies.

There are two unmentioned almost ‘taboo’ factors largely overlooked in the carbon emission and climate change story. Firstly, the ever increasing world population and Secondly the growing over ‘consuming’ and often ‘overweight’ population. This one mainly in developed western world economies at the moment.

Senator Kerry, who is married into the Heinz Food Family, well represents the democratic ‘Woke’ element of the Second Factor, that is the over indulging western world as does Greta T from Sweden. (Ironically the very high individual wealth of the tiny populations of Norway and Sweden are derived from carbon derivatives of oil, gas and timber and will continue to do so I’m sure)

The Hypocrisy is the aforementioned telling India and China to stop using coal and ultimately fossil fuels. India’s Population is expected to exceed that of China by the 2030’s, around 1,500.000.000 (1.5 billion). All these people and many more elsewhere would like the same standard of living as Mr Kerry and Miss Thunberg THAT WILL NEED A HELL OF A LOT MORE ENERGY including coal, oil and gas.

SHELL AND BP are the BEST advocates in promoting a careful transition to cleaner alternative energy sources as soon as prudently possible as well as meeting this undisputed massive increase in energy demand.

I go along with all BL’s foreword strategy for BP ( except the sale of petrochemical division to INEOS who are no doubt delighted with the gift).

He wisely sold his 5 million shares in BP at over £5 area pre pandemic which confirms his good insight for the future. ‘Sower grapes ‘ here from me as that’s the time and price area I bought my large holding in the Company!

I don’t understand the sense in share buy backs. I am perhaps a BIT THICK but it seems like an accountancy ‘smoke and Mirrors’ fiddle to prevent rewarding shareholders with a fair and immediate share of the increased profits now, (BP was pretty quick to halve the dividend when things got rather tricky in 2020).

I invest to see my capital base increase by increased dividend payouts and in the VERY LIKELY consequence thereof, the an improved SP. The 5% or so a year the company saves on the dividend on the bought back shares is the ‘smoke and mirrors’ logic to my limited comprehension of this ‘buy back’ policy.

If they are so reluctant to increase the dividend back to pre pandemic levels then why not put these Buy Back Billions into new investment projects, Mr Looney PROMISES at least 8/10 % return on capital even on the renewable side of the business, (rather more in that dirty oil and gas stuff if it is still an option fo BP).

Any enlightening comments will be much appreciated. These comments are ‘IMHO’ at the moment!

Shell ought to have a better PR. Advisers to protect their CEO from any direct involvement with the extremist elements of the ‘climate change’ brigade. these fringe

Big Oil is the most unloved sector in the market at the moment. ESG investing and climate change hysteria along with litigation fears are the main culprits. A 10%, 20% or even 50% uplift are all realistic on present trading data. A few good quarters results on the basis of stable prices of oil and gas resulting from a balanced supply and demand environment will bring back investor confidence in time.

Investors will also return again when they realise Oil and Gas will be the main energy source for decades to come and THAT ‘Big Oil’ can be the most positive contributor to a cleaner and quicker energy transformation. Also provide a secure healthy long term dividend too.

Big Oil shares have moved in tandem recently. The recent spike was 16th of June and Fridays close shows the following SP comparisons,

CHEVRON - 11.1%
EXONN -14.8%
BP. - 12.7%
OCCIDENTAL-15.0%
RDS ‘B’. +1.0%

BP is not the big oil ‘pariah’ on Wall Street on these figures and might outperform with their ‘Greener’ credentials in time. Shell has been doing catch up possibly helped by Q2 dividend increase and the Gas price boom!

Patience is the best advice, I need it as my BP average is over £5! And RDS over £2.20

Is BP’s transformation from fossil fuels to renewables too quick or too slow?

Firstly over 80% of world energy is sourced from fossil fuels at the moment. ‘Energy’ is the largest and most essential commodity required by human kind. PLUS it has massive growth demand for many decades ahead. (Remember 7.9 billion people are all needing more and more energy to improve there standard of living as well as the 80 million more population each year, over 10 billion total by 2050!).

Remember BP is now an ‘Energy Company’ in the largest and most essential market sector known to ‘human kind’. The future is EXCITING AND CHALLENGING for the Company. A radical and speedy transformation of the energy supply business is ‘a done deal’ and BP has to be at the forefront of this.

The Company is moving fast and aggressively in building the essential foundation blocks for this renewable transformation. Their actions should be applauded by politicians and climate change lobbyists alike. Indeed ‘Big Oil’ can be the most effective players in this changeover.

The speed of this transformation by BP must be ‘FULLY FLEXIBLE’ in order to account for the countless variable factors that will crop during the next decade. Whatever - the main policy criteria is the maximum exploitation of all their existing fossil fuel assets and a very healthy and speedy return on capital on all ‘renewable’ related investments.

I feel there has been an increased sensitivity to the investor/ share holder recently, we are AN essential in this successful transformation.

I have a big commitment to traditional ‘oil and gas’ Companies and my large holding in BP averages £5.20!!! This is a great site, thanks to all, Neversellshell for interesting links and Friday Club, and everyone’s contributions and opinions.

Thanks for video of 14th with Mr Looney and Alix Steel on Assett sell offs. I will listen tomorrow with interest and hope it gives me confidence that BP and Mr Looney are in future RESPECTFUL of all their existing oil and gas assets.

INEOS we’re delighted to pick up cheap BP’s highly profitable and perhaps greatest potential long term growth area sector, their petrochemical business. Perhaps Mr Looney will sell BP’s 19.75% share in Rosneft now, I bet Mr Ratcliffe of INEOS can’t wait for another present!
