Retail footfall in January showed a much-needed increase compared with last year, according to the latest figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC)

The BRC-Sensormatic figures indicate that total UK footfall was up by 6.6% on January last year, compared with a year-on-year fall of 2.2% in December.

Footfall was up in January in all four UK nations, led by Wales (8.5%), then England (7.4%), Northern Ireland (3.5%) and Scotland (1%).

Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the BRC, said: “Shopper footfall received a welcome boost in January following a disappointing festive period.

“Store visits increased substantially in the first week of the month as many consumers hit the January sales in their local community.”

The increase came despite snowy weather and Storm Eowyn causing disruption in some areas.

Andy Sumpter, retail consultant for EMEA at Sensormatic, agreed that the figures were good news after a “dreary December”.

But he added: “Even if shopper traffic recovery has finally turned a corner, the challenge for retailers will be solving the next conundrum: how they balance enhanced footfall – which requires optimised store staffing to convert into sales – and the significant rises to labour costs borne out of the Budget on the one hand, with consumer appetite for discounts – a long-term margin-eroder – on the other, which will not be an easy circle to square.”

"Managed to sell at close to today’s high. That’s me done with ASOS for a while, once the dust settles on today’s news it will return to recent levels in my opinion. Seems to be on its way back down to the £4 mark this afternoon, and then be back around 370-380 by tomorrow".
