Investing in shares are GAMBLE, if it was sure to make money all the time, no one will go out and work. They all be just buying and selling shares. What he or she might have done is, sold their existing holding in other stocks to raise the funds, which would have enable them to buy. I have been saving in investing in ISA share and can easily raise around 180K by selling my holding. You are right to say Annual limit is £20 K max.
