(Alliance News) - Directa Plus PLC on Monday said customer NexTech Batteries Inc has established an Italian subsidiary to explore the feasibility of producing cathode active materials in Italy, where Directa Plus's graphene technology will be an important component.

The London-based producer of graphene-based products said NexTech's subsidiary, called NexTech Italia SpA, will look at producing these materials using Directa Plus's graphene nanoplatelets for the manufacture of lithium-sulphur batteries throughout Europe, "in order to accelerate the technology's commercialisation".

Directa Plus shares jumped 12% at 134.23 pence each in London on Monday morning.

The formation of the Italian subsidiary follows a memorandum of understanding between Directa Plus and NexTech, agreed in October 2020, to test G+ products in the synthesis of cathode active materials for NexTech's first generation of Li-S batteries, Directa Plus said.

Cathode materials are comprised of cobalt, nickel and manganese in the crystal structure forming a multi-metal oxide material to which lithium is added. This type of battery includes a variety of products that cater to different needs for high energy density or high load capacity, such as electric vehicles.

"This is a key building block in laying the foundation for strategic growth. We will work together with existing partners of Directa Plus, located in several countries across the European Union, to support the development of Lithium-Sulphur batteries in Europe. NexTech and Directa Plus are already working together on a number of applications including electric transportation, portable electronics and electricity grids," said Directa Plus Chief Executive Guilio Cesareo.

In February 2021, the two companies entered into a three year exclusive supply agreement and opened a joint laboratory to conduct research & development on "next-generation" battery cathode active material and to support the growth of current and future applications.

I must admit, I have never fully understood the implications of a new stand alone company. The holding company ie Directa here still hold ownership ( %), but sometimes the new company is actually floated with new money. In those cases, shares are given pro-rata to Directa share holders.

Directa Plus PLC (LON:DCTA) has reported a surge in revenues over 2020 as the firm said it had maintained its focus on delivering products into its core environmental remediation and textile verticals.

For the 12 months to December 31, the maker of graphene-based products reported that its sales and service revenues have increased 144% to €6.4mln, while its underlying loss (LBITDA) narrowed to €2.6mln from €2.7mln, in line with market expectations.

The firm also highlighted a shift in its revenue mix, with environmental remediation now accounting for 68% of revenues compared to 33% in 2019, while textiles made up 30% of revenue from 63% previously.

Looking ahead, Directa Plus said it is “confident about future prospects and expects continuous growth”, adding that it has seen a “strong performance” in the first four months of 2021 with revenues for the period up 49% year-on-year at €2.8mln.

"Despite the impact of [coronavirus], 2020 saw great progress for Directa Plus not only in our key verticals of environmental remediation and textiles, but also in the other industrial sectors such as composites, batteries and consumer electronics”, founder and chief executive Giulio Cesareo said in a statement.

“We have an excellent pipeline of opportunities and our proprietary scalable, modular manufacturing process allows us to produce high quality engineered graphene materials at an attractive price point. We consider health and safety of all stakeholders and environmental protection as top priorities and we expect another year of good progress in 2021. We are particularly excited by our partnership with NexTech for high performance Lithium-Sulphur batteries where we believe we are making excellent progress", he added.

Trading in Q1 2021 has been strong, with revenues expected to be around €1.8m, up 20 per cent. from the same period in 2020 (€1.5m). The Group expects to announce its audited results for FY2020 in mid-May 2021 and to now report revenues of approximately €6.7m, a further improvement from the previously reported expectation of €6.5m. The Group's current order book stands at approximately €4.3m, which is expected to be delivered over the rest of FY2021 and there is a strong pipeline of opportunities.

The rally is giving succor to aspiring tin miner Cornish Metals Inc.
Last month, the company drove a diamond-encrusted drill into the ground to search for copper and tin in the Gwennap district of Cornwall, southwest England, where copper was mined in the 1700s and 1800s.

To pay for the exploration, Cornish Metals listed its shares in London and raised £8.2 million, or the equivalent of $11.6 million, a deal that gained traction because of the upswing in prices, said Chief Executive Richard Williams.

Cornish Metals is weighing ways to raise more money to drain as much as 10 million cubic meters of water from South Crofty, a separate, disused tin mine a few miles down the road.

Options include another equity raise or a private-equity backer, according to Mr. Williams.

In addition, Directa and NexTech have now established a joint laboratory in Lomazzo, with the objective of developing new specific grades of G+ graphene nanoplatelets for the next generation of higher performance lithium-sulphur (Li-S) batteries. Scientists from both companies are participating in this development, Directa Plus said.

Meanwhile, progress at the group's environmental subsidiary, Setcar, continues to be very positive, the group said.
