philip this is what JH says on stable tours: He’s in great form and will run in the Ascot Gold Cup. He hasn’t run since he beat Order Of St George at Navan. I had him entered for the Saval Beg at Leopardstown last month, but the ground was very quick at the time and while he wouldn’t mind it, I didn’t want to risk jarring him up in prior to his main target which has always been the Gold Cup. In terms of his stamina for the race, of course we won’t know until he tries, but he got the mile-and-three-quarters at Navan very well and we’ll hope for the best. He doesn’t have to make the running, so we might slot in and see how he goes.
LORD BALLIM comes into the race in terrific form and he's now tasted victory four times from his last five appearances. He has kept defying the handicapper and has a mixture of victories over hurdles/fences. LORD BALLIM was an emphatic winner at this venue 37 days ago, despite making a couple of blunders on the way around, he won with plenty to spare, keeping on strongly to win by an impressive five lengths at the line. He has really got his act together and his partnership with CEIRAN GETHINGS is pretty good if I am honest. Form figures when the pair combined read - 2111U1. Trainer NIGEL HAWKE has hit good form of late and he's very good at placing his horses. Amazingly, connections travel a whopping 992 miles (nearly the whole country) with there sole runner on the card LORD BALLIM. That is some travelling and it's nearly 500 miles there and back to home soil, which is around 7 and a half hours one way and 14 hours total journey. They wouldn't be doing that for no reason, because they must feel LORD BALLIM has another big chance at the course he relished last time out. He is the longest traveller I have ever witnessed, and connections did well with a runner that was the longest traveller last night on the flat at Newcastle. LORD BALLIM goes up in trip/class, but he's on a serious roll of late and the handicapper might not stop him from winning again here. The long journey could well pay off and he should be in the firing line with a very light-weight 10-3.
Just to remind you all that it doesn't always pay to Cash Out after the first winner: I missed out on a great patent because I cashed out after the 14-1 winner, Doh Selection Selection Details Result 1 Horse Racing RIPON 19:05 HANDICAP 6f 12th of May 2017 7:05 pm Win or E/W 1/4 places 1,2 Explain @ 11/2 (GP) Win Selection Selection Details Result 2 Horse Racing CHESTER 13:50 CRABBIES EARL GROSVENOR HANDICAP 7f 127y 12th of May 2017 1:50 pm Win or E/W 1/5 places 1,2,3,4 Sound Advice @ 11/1 (GP) Win Selection Selection Details Result 3 Horse Racing NOTTINGHAM 19:25 HANDICAP 1m 75y 12th of May 2017 7:25 pm Win or E/W 1/4 places 1,2,3 Braztime @ 8/1 (GP) Win
Sad News from Switzerland Classic-winning jockey George Baker was in intensive care in a Swiss hospital on Sunday afternoon after a fall at St Moritz. Baker, who won the St Leger in September on Harbour Law, was riding Boomerang Bob for Jamie Osborne on the frozen lake track in Switzerland when the horse was brought down and was fatally injured in the first race of the day.
Tend to agree re Wink Oliver but would prefer to see a Jockey change as todays regular rider is still looking for a first win: http://www.racingpost.com/horses/jockey_home.sd?jockey_id=95441#topJockTabs=jockey_race_record&bottomJockTabs=jockey_form My bet of the day DREAM BOLT 2.10 Sandown
