I believe oil was falling at the time you were trying to deal.
In which case why would any MM (or any other buyer for that matter) want to buy your shares at a 'normal' price? Surely they would want a small premium for the privilege of allowing you to sell your (very many) shares to them in a falling oil market??
If you wanted to sell in a rising market, I'm sure they'd be more than willing to give you a favourable spread., but you probably never want to sell at those times!!
No mystery to it. No manipulation etc etc...
Can't have your (large) cake and eat it at the same time, I'm afraid to say ... hope you mother told you that, too!!! ;-)
