The coal industry has two principal markets, namely thermal coal (for energy use, including power generation and other applications such as the cement manufacturing sector), and metallurgical coal (principally for steel making); but there are also other coal uses, including conversion into gas or other energy.
Coal and coal by-products:
Ammonia gas recovered from coke ovens is used to manufacture ammonia salts, nitric acid and agricultural fertilisers. Thousands of different products have coal or coal by-products as components: soap, aspirins, solvents, dyes, plastics and fibres, such as rayon and nylon.
