Bozi, yes it would. I voted for his re-election and was saddened by his performance. It's the first time in nearly 40 years that I've attended an agm where the chairman and ceo didn't offer a review of the year (normally done by the chairman) and then an outline of the future strategy given by a ceo. As I said earlier it was an opportunity missed.

Smickster, why do you imagine I want to give the company away cheaply? Nothing could be further from the truth.

Bozi, don't be daft. Mather missed an opportunity and one which would have taken no effort. Good manners would have helped his cause. All he achieved was to make more than a few shareholders question their decision to vote for him. I suspect they wouldn't do it again...not that there'll be another opportunity to do so.

Smickster, which 'facts'? His observations about the agm are just plain wrong. Yes, Mather kept his job, but the implications were clear to see for anyone who understands boardroom and shareholder dynamics.

There are accepted and established protocols relating to what the chairman and ceo should say and they were not adhered to. Frankly, in light of the fact Mather kept his job (so far) by virtue of the small shareholders, the very least he could have done is to have thanked us for our support. It was extreme bad manners not to do so. Additionally, and as I said, he had the opportunity to explain to us his plans for the future...he elected not to do so. So, please tell me how or why you feel his performance was satisfactory?

Quady, as ever you are totally wrong. There's one person on here who knows exactly who I am and what my experience is, and it's most certainly not what you think.
And please tell me, when have I been wrong? Sadly for you, you've been wrong at every turn and virtually every post you make reveals your woeful lack of knowledge about anything other than astronomy.

Mather, perhaps you could give your view as to how our CEO made a success of the agm? And perhaps you could explain why it now appears as if it's cost him his job? And why didn't he do what every CEO does and address the meeting? In what way was that satisfactory?
You offer no thoughts, but merely attack people with whom you disagree.

owan, indeed. He had the perfect opportunity to get up on his hind legs and express a degree of contrition and to thank shareholders for their support. He could have outlined how he was going to take matters forward...in effect a rallying call to the troops. Instead, we got nothing and Mather's presence was no more than that of a sullen hulk. Not really CEO stuff, was it?

In fact it was so successful that the company was forced into a humiliating retreat on two resolutions which were specifically tabled with the intention of angering our two main shareholders (such a clever idea) and the chief executive is on his way out of the door. An absolute triumph then! I would have hated to have seen a failure.

copper, likewise. Having hung on at the agm, I expected Mather to get on with the task he outlined in his interview. Something appears to have happened which may have the caused the re-think. And I rather suspect the phone calls/meetings may have been going on all weekend. As I said, I'm very surprised we haven't heard anything, particularly if it's true, as it's an issue of great significance.
Perhaps there's a raft of other info to be communicated and they haven't got all the ducks in a row?

I agree, iceberg, me neither. I'm invested in the assets and the future demand for copper. The only caveat to that is what I've said before, which is that I've always thought Mather would have been able to negotiate well. I just wish he'd pursued a strategy which would have allowed him to demonstrate those skills.

I see you continue to make the point about the number of shareholders who voted etc - you do understand that the only thing that matters are the actual numbers, not some theoretical argument about what may, or may not, have happened? In fact it goes way beyond the numbers - what's important is WHO voted against him. And you know the answer to that.

smickster, if you can't see why the departure of Mather is a defining moment, you have no hope of understanding what's been going on, his impact upon the company and what is now likely to emerge. It will be a very long way from being "business as usual", as you describe it.
I recall you being part of the group who described the agm as a "triumph" for Mather (forgive me if I've wrongly assigned you to them). These people defended Mather to the last man and yet now many of them appear to argue his departure will be of no significance. How bizarre that they have changed their minds in such a short space of time.

iceberg, you say no major news outlet ran the story - Reuters did and I assume you count them as being 'major'?
It seems to me the company needs to issue an announcement, even if it's only a denial. This is of great significance and radio silence will not suffice.
My view is that we'll get an RNS and it will confirm the story. It will be worded in such a way as to make it sound as if this is completely normal and is no more more than a confirmation of what Mather himself said last year i.e succession planning. Of course, you'd have to be very naive to believe this, but that's irrelevant - it's happening and and life will be very different from now on...as some of us said it would on the 18th December.
