I would guess many sold expecting the sp to drop, hoping to buy back lower. Ftse250 news has put a spanner in the works meaning they would have to pay more to get back in.
I'm guessing alot took colonels advice/view and now find themselves in this predicament.
He called it correct previously but the situation was totally different then so I couldn't see it happening this time.
Not calling anyone out or trying to cause any friction.

To receive a dividend, investors must hold the stock at the opening of the market on the ex-dividend date. That means they can sell their shares on the ex-dividend date and still receive the dividend. However, investors who buy shares on the ex-dividend date will not receive the payment.
It's absolutely a non-issue imo.
The headlines should be the fact he is picking up the cost from January onwards and the fact he only took home 20k salary having given the rest to charity.
