EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Rolls-Royce SMR Ltd welcomes the Committee’s examination of the decarbonisation of the UK’s

power supply sector.

 Nuclear power is key to decarbonising the power supply by 2035 but the previous developer-led

model for delivering conventional, gigawatt scale new nuclear power stations has failed.

 Using factory-built components, modular construction methods with a proven reactor design,

the Rolls-Royce SMR is a radically different way to deploy nuclear power compared to large

scale conventional reactors.

 The Rolls-Royce SMR is the fastest way to get new nuclear onto the UK grid.

 The current Energy Security Strategy suggests waiting until the next Parliament for a definitive

commitment on SMR deployment. This is an artificial and unnecessary delay that will cause us

to import increasing supplies of gas, increasing costs and Co2 production rather than relying on

stable secure supplies of nuclear power. Every year that a decision to deploy RR SMR

technology is delayed has a consequential delay on first power.

 The Government needs to move faster than currently planned and take a decision now to

secure SMRs at the least cost to the consumer and enable us to reach energy security for the UK

faster.

 To provide power as soon as possible as the Prime Minister has set out, decisions must be taken

now, by industry and government, to deliver SMR power on the timescale the climate and

energy security crisis require.

 We should not wait until the next Parliament for a definitive commitment on SMR deployment

as the Strategy currently intends.

 Earlier deployment also means we can capitalise upon our first mover advantage in the UK so

that we can unlock the global SMR export opportunity.

 Further, if the UK is able to export SMR technology to other countries, the international market

for low carbon energy brings down the cost of each SMR we need in the UK.

 Every day of delay adds extra cost and holds back the development of a domestic UK nuclear

industry and the associated UK jobs and UK supply chain.

Committee and we would be very happy to provide oral evidence to this inquiry.

Tusimice, North Bohemia, May 13 (CTK) - Semi-state energy group CEZ could operate up to six small modular reactors in Tusimice near Chomutov, which could replace electricity production of the Tusimice II lignite power plant, according to its published intention.

The first unit is expected to be commissioned in 2038. The total electrical output of the reactors is to reach 1,500 megawatts. The plan envisages about 1,200 workers working around the clock

The Environment Ministry has initiated a fact-finding procedure during which municipalities and other authorities may comment on the plan within one month.

The beginning of electricity production in Tusimice dates back to 1963-1964, when the Tusimice I power plant was put into operation. It served until the early 1990s, after which all six units were closed. The Tusimice II power plant with four units has been in operation since the mid-1970s. Each has a capacity of 200 megawatts.

The limit for the operation of the Tusimice plant is coal mining. The plant gets coal from the neighbouring Libous mine, which belongs to the Doly Nastup Tusimice mine. "Mining at Doly Nastup Tusimice could continue until 2029 according to the mining permit. Any possible shortening of the period is now being assessed as part of decarbonisation targets," Lukas Kopecky, spokesman for CEZ's mining subsidiary Severoceske doly, told CTK

The future is Nuclear

Rolls-Royce is also investing in the nuclear energy markets, which could be a big winner for the firm in the long term. It’s doing this through the use of SMR technology. This changes the approach of nuclear energy from a large, complex infrastructure project into a factory-built, commoditized product. There are significant benefits to SMRs. Most notably, they’re a lot quicker to produce than traditional nuclear energy power plants, there’s less capital investment required, there’s more flexibility with sitting, and they are cleaner for the environment. Fundamentally, what’s most important for investors is the size of this market. This market is fairly new, but because of its many benefits, it’s expected to supply 2% of the world's electricity by 2043, valuing the opportunity at $295bn.

But why is Rolls-Royce one of the best options to take advantage of this potentially massive market? Well, because it's already making huge strides in the field and entering agreements with governments to supply them with SMRs. For example, the Czech Republic recently selected the firm for its small reactors project. Furthermore, the UK government has agreed a £9bn deal for Nuclear Submarine reactors with Rolls-Royce. We’re only in the early stages of the growth story for this market. If Rolls-Royce can continue executing well and enter into agreements for the supply of SMRs as it has been doing, then it could take hold of a significant chunk of the potential $295bn market. Bearing in mind the company only has a £66bn market cap, its shares don’t look very expensive after taking this opportunity into account

In the medium and long term, Rolls Royce share price will also be supported by rising inclination to SMRs. It currently has ongoing contracts with the UK Government, Czech Republic Government and Siemens Energy.
