RE: RoC cancels Iron-Ore Project with Aussie miner21 Dec 2020 15:23
"Would China want the Sundance mine in addition to Simandou and Zanaga? A normal miner might not want Sundance in addition as more supply will push down the iron ore price - but for China, this would be an added benefit. "
Personally, I think China will move to secure supplies from a few sources to make sure there is alternative supplies. In addition, I think that they will want to sidestep the market, so steel mills investing directly with cash and offtake agreements to get cheap supplies and fixed rates.
Doing this will have several effects, screw the Ozzies, and also lower global prices (in time), however, there is little chance that Sundance, Zanaga and Simandou would supply all their/world needs, so they can, in effect, manipulate global prices by varying output, and benefit from profits from the mines on sales to rest of world from the African mines.
I, personally, do not think there is any doubt that the Chinese will make a move for Zanaga, but Glencore is the big unknown.
