Step by Step Guide: Discovering WK23 Jun 2020 10:20
To those interested, below is a step by step 'how to' guide to using Sentinel and seeing for yourselves the Substantial progress that is being made at the WK Operation, ok, lets go:
1. Open a browser.. Google Chrome will do.
2. Type in 'Sentinel Hub EO Browser', and search!
3. Top of the results should be 'Sentinel Hub EO Browser; with a trusty green tick next to it.
4. The Sentinel browser pops up with a nice 'Welcome to EO Browser' window, allowing you to further navigate as a new user, but just click on 'don't show again' you're all clever people (well most are..)
5. You now have free reign. So, now to navigate to the site. You can freely zoom around but just getting straight to it, type in co-ordinates '59.54124, 58.91298' in the upper right hand side 'go to place' and hit search.
6. You will now find yourself hovering over the locality, to the East, we have Serov. So now we have to zoom in on the site. For this, it is easier going straight to satellite mode. So, on the left you have an EO Browser interface. Click on the search part. This now brings up your various search options, dates, satellites types etc. So, Sentinel 2, highlight, L1C is preference (should be default be selected). Click search.
7. In the results tab, you can see a load of various mini screenshots of the various images 'per day'. As you can see most are quite cloudy, so scroll down to the 19th (last fully clear day recorded on sentinel) and click visualize.
8. The main aerial map will now transform into the satellite image.
9. Centrally within the view, you will see a 'mountain' think its called Tovinskiy. The WK mining site is W,W,N by about 5k. It all becomes clear, and actually you'll see a cheeky little cloud covering the east side!
10. So that's it. Pick a date, save image and compare. 'Fool Proof'. You can also play around with other satellite options (bands, RGB values etc which can assist in identifying differences).
Simple as that. To save faffing about having to zoom in and locate the site again and again, just register and save a pin on the site. The high def image yesterday was provided by another platform called 'planet' which is really impressive, but on a 14 day trial so will have limited use of this but i'm sure someone else can take the reigns.
All... Have a look for yourself. It's there, evident, FACTUAL.
ENJOY ;) !
