It's simple really, Through my broker I'll borrow a share from someone, don't know who...which sometimes I have to pay borrowing costs but I get paid interest on the equity I don't own but have borrowed to sell to someone but it's a leveraged trade so I don't actually own the money I've used for the trade so I borrowed to fund the borrow to sell the shares I don't own.
