UK GAS-Prices rise on low LNG supply, higher carbon, outage risk

Mon, 05th Jul 2021 08:59

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - British and Dutch wholesale gas
prices mainly rose on Monday morning, after hitting record highs
last week, due to low liquefied natural gas supply, higher
carbon prices and the risk of outages.

* The UK August contract was 1.50 pence higher
at
90.00 pence per therm by 0744 GMT, after hitting a fresh record
high of 91.50 p on Friday.

* The Dutch front month contract was up by 1.58
euros
at a new record high of 37.33 euros per megawatt hour.

* Liquefied natural gas send-out is still low at 7.5 million
cubic
metres (mcm) and no cargoes have been confirmed to arrive in
Britain this month.

* "Unplaned maintenances and/or extensions to current works
remain
a bullish risk," said Wayne Bryan, gas analyst at Refinitiv.

* "Any maintenance amendments or unplanned outages can cause
a
bullish reaction and this highlights the nervousness in European
gas markets," he added.

* Prices rose to record highs last week but eased late on
Friday.

* The UK day-ahead contract was 2.25 pence
higher at
91.00 p/therm.

* "We have not seen two successive bearish days on the UK
day-ahead since the middle of June and Friday's downside may
have been too strong," Bryan said.

* The U.S. Biden administration could face pressure to block
Russia's Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline after a House of
Representatives panel passed an amendment seeking to repeal the
U.S. State Department's ability to waive sanctions on the
project.

* The amendment seeks to repeal sanctions waivers in fiscal
year
2022 but the pipeline is 95% finished and the bill has a long
way to go before becoming law.

* The IEA said on Monday that global gas demand this year is
expected to rise by 3.6% as global economies recover following a
record fall in 2020.

* The benchmark Dec-21 EU carbon contract was 0.70
euro
higher at 58.05 euros a tonne, while the Dec-21 British carbon
contract was slow to trade.
