Gelion shares rise on Nissan EV battery collaboration, grant funding

Tue, 02nd Jun 2026 14:10

(Alliance News) - Gelion PLC on Tuesday said it had partnered with Nissan Motor Co Ltd to develop electric vehicle batteries and had secured UK grant funding.

Shares in Gelion rose 18% to 21.00 pence on Tuesday afternoon in London, and are up 50% over the past year.

The London-based battery energy storage systems firm has entered a three-year collaboration with Nissan Technical Centre Europe, owned by the Yokohama, Japan-based car maker, and the University of Oxford, starting in June 2026.

Dubbed Cost-effective, Resilient Solid-state Li-S, the project aims to replace minerals in lithium-ion battery cathodes with Gelion's nano-encapsulated sulfur.

According to Gelion, sulfur has an advantage in "western" markets as it is "abundantly available, free from supply chain constraints", as opposed to nickel and cobalt. The company also argues that sulfur is a safer, longer-lasting and more affordable option.

Total project costs are estimated at GBP3.4 million, with GBP2.4 million in grant funding secured from Innovate UK across the partners, including GBP1.6 million for Gelion's UK subsidiary.

"The project supports the development of a resilient UK‑based battery materials supply chain and lays the groundwork for Gelion to become a domestic supplier of advanced cathode materials. In addition, this will also support in executing Nissan's aim to be a leader in EV solid state battery technologies and to continue to invest in the UK," Gelion noted.

Nissan previously has shared plans for a UK manufacturing hub in Sunderland.

The results of the joint project will determine future commercialisation and collaboration plans, Gelion added.

The company's Chief Executive John Wood commented: "This endorsement of our technology's commercial potential in solid-state cells for automotive applications highlights the platform nature of [nano-encapsulated sulfur] building on our work in liquid electrolyte and graphitic anode systems. The two primary opportunities to push battery performance boundaries are solid-state and sulfur cathode material. This project combines both and we are excited by the way the core technologies have the potential to complement and extend each other."
