Car insurer Admiral led today's risers after data showed that the decline in average premiums across the sector eased considerably at the end of 2013.Retailers Sainsbury and M&S climbed after UK retail sales volumes grew at a whopping 2.6% month-on-month pace in December, up from a revised 0.1% increase in November and well ahead of the 0.3% growth expected by analysts.Miners extended yesterday's gains which came after Citigroup lifted its 12-month stance on the mining sector from 'neutral' to 'bullish', representing its first positive outlook for the industry in three years. Rio Tinto was also being lifted by UBS's decision to keep its 'buy' rating on the stock, saying the company remains its top pick in the sector on the back of its volume growth, cost cutting and cash-flow.Meanwhile, High Street bookie William Hill underwhelmed with a 6% increase in fourth-quarter revenue in retail and online. The company said it was a "strong end to the year".The Royal Bank of Scotland dropped after the Financial Conduct Authority launched a review into the bank's treatment of struggling small businesses.Shell also declined after saying that fourth-quarter earnings excluding one-offs are expected to be just $2.9bn, down from $4.5bn in the third quarter and $7.3bn in the fourth quarter the year before.
