Simultaneously, Devlin has decided to step down from Marston PLC from his role as a chairman "in view of his other increased business commitments". Devlin will depart Marston's on May 31, one day before he joins housebuilder Persimmon.
Devlin has been chairman of pub operator and brewing company Marston's since 2013, and he is also currently the senior independent director of the Football Association, a role he will also leave at the end of May.
"On behalf of the board I would like to thank Roger for his contribution and counsel during his chairmanship of Marston's. He leaves with our best wishes and we wish him every success with his future endeavours and other business interests," Marston's Chief Executive Officer Ralph Findlay said.
Devlin has also recently been appointed chairman designate of William Hill PLC.
"Following a very thorough process, the board has agreed that Roger is the right candidate to chair Persimmon. I am sure that his wide business experience and his personal qualities will enable him to make a significant contribution to the future of the group," said Nigel Mills, senior independent director and acting chairman of Persimmon.
